Aides to Mitt Romney indicated on Thursday the Bay Stater’s presidential campaign had raised north of $40 million in April.

The impressive figure outstrips previous months and puts the GOP’er at virtual parity with the fundraising clip of President Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee, whose joint effort culled $44 million in the same period.

FEC reports indicate the pair have been hitting up the Peach State for cash, raking in $3.6 million between the two of them. (In total, Georgians have contributed $6,242,250 to the presidential race.)

Campaign finance watchers expect Romney to maintain his new, aggressive fundraising pace — and to deepen his campaign coffers with more Buckhead dough having now sewn up the primary contest.
