The chief strategist for Karen Handel’s failed gubernatorial campaign said Wednesday the former secretary of state is weighing a primary challenge to U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
“She’s considering it,” Rob Simms, a Handel confidant who now serves as chief of staff for a Pennsylvania congressional lawmaker, told the Weekly Standard.
Simms did not immediately respond to an inquiry by Tipsheet asking if Handel’s campaign flirtation could be considered in utero or something more closely resembling a quiet testing of the waters. Handel, likewise, did not respond to a request for comment on a possible campaign.
Chambliss is eminently exposed to his right flank as he approaches the midterm primary, but most political observers anticipate a promotion-hungry challenger–say, Rep. Tom Price–to emerge from the lower chamber.
